So I read The Shack...

...and it's challenged me to be more theologically astute.

I stupidly listened to Mark Driscoll's opinion of the book as I started writing a longer, more postive review of the book, and now I'm a more than a little reminded on how much more I should read about God.

Well.

Personally, I think it's right on some things, like how amazing God's love is for us and how Jesus Christ died for our sins; unclear on other things, such as the nature of sin; ambiguous and possibly unhlelpful on some things, such as the doctrine of the Trinity (how anyone can think they can knock that subject on its head in one fell swoop, with one book is pretty wild).

I'd probably recommend another book to a non-Christian seeking to know God. Like the bible. I guess if you want to understand theology more you should be reading a book on theology, not a novel. Don't bother with The Shack.

Chattings...

  • I like those mornings when my daily journey to work is interrupted by something beautiful, like the goody bag of freebies I was given today at Tower Hill station. Snacks, health pills; suggestions for exotic holidays...it's always good when you look in the bag and you see FOOD.
  • A good thought: never pass up an opportunity to keep your mouth shut.

The Sovereignty of God on a snowy day

As I write it is snowing. Southeast England is currently under it's heaviest snowfall in 18 years. We're totally unprepared for this kind of Siberian weather, and thus there are no bus services or trains running in London today.

I had plans for today - to go to work (obviously) and to meet with a friend after. Both have been cancelled - the former to my joy and the latter to my disappointment.

My mum's been saying "This country full of busy natties, what has become of all their plans? Nobody can get anywhere. Who's the greater now: them or God?"

This is poignant for me, not just because of today's and possibly tomorrow's postponed plans, but because I'm currently planning for my future as a financially stable adult. I wanna buy some clothes, I wanna finish learning to drive...I wanna help pay bills....oh the list gets longer. It started out as fun, but now it's just a headache.

While my mum was spouting her words of wisdom the verses in Matthew 6 came to mind.

25"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?"

Matthew 6:25-27

God provides. God can also take away with a breath of snow. His power is amazing and never to be taken lightly. The beauty of it all is that He is wonderful, and allows us unfettered access to him. We count more to him than the birds, so He will provide all we need. I hope his commands work their way into my life so I can stop worrying!
